James Youle – Flood Risk Technician
What made you join WA? I was very fortunate to be picked up by WA after I received disappointing news that my graduate scheme with another company had been cancelled due to COVID-19. Waterman Aspen’s recruitment philosophy is one that should be replicated across the sector, they are willing to hear from anyone who may be looking for a new opportunity and are always looking out for enthusiastic talent. For WA, a long and drawn out recruitment process is a thing of the past!
What secondments have been most interesting and why? I am currently on my first secondment within the Flood Risk Management Team at Staffordshire County Council (SCC). My role as a Flood Risk Technician involves assisting SCC with their statutory duties as a lead local flood authority. The work is extremely varied but so far, I have been able to further develop my skills in GIS analysis and gain significant insight into how flooding is dealt with at a local level.
What are the best aspects of working for WA? Starting your career as a graduate out of university could potentially be quite daunting but not with WA. From day one I was made to feel very welcome and indeed part of a team. I have a regular catch up with the other WA graduates which has really helped me to settle in well. This has made starting work from home during COVID-19 much easier.
WA also offer a very competitive salary and other great benefits including regular social events, a welcome pack sent to your home before you commence employment and a company car (which as a car enthusiast was a deal clincher!).
A strong emphasis is also put on your own personal development which is great. I now look forward to working towards becoming a Chartered Member of CIWEM.
Why would you recommend working for WA? The secondment model of the business really offers the best of both worlds. It provides the opportunity to work in a variety of roles both public/private but along job security and continued support for your own personal development.
I would recommend Waterman Aspen to anyone looking for a new opportunity and I have already pointed several of friends and previous colleagues in the direction of WA.
