What happens at the end of a secondment?

End of secondment with WA

If you’re on a secondment, it’s natural to start thinking about what comes next. A secondment is a valuable opportunity to develop new skills, make new connections and explore a different role. But as it comes to an end, it’s normal to feel some uncertainty about the future. Understanding the possible next steps can help you plan and make the most of your experience.

Move to your next placement

For many people, the next step is a new opportunity. Your Waterman Aspen manager, along with our recruitment team and wider management network, will work closely with you to find a role that fits your skills and career goals. You’ll be guided toward opportunities that align with where you want to go next, whether that means stepping into a higher-level position, exploring a different industry or continuing in a similar role.

Wherever the path takes you, it’s a chance to keep building your skills and make an even bigger impact. And while moving on is exciting, sometimes the journey isn’t quite finished yet…

Extending your placement

There are two typical scenarios where your secondment can be extended:

  1. If the project you’ve been working on isn’t quite finished, your secondment may be extended. This gives you the chance to see the project through to completion, continue contributing to the team, and further develop your skills.
  2. In other cases, the project may be finished, but the client has other projects coming up and wants to keep you on. When that happens, your secondment may be extended too. This gives you the chance to contribute to the next project and build on the relationships you’ve already formed.

Transitioning to your next secondment

When your secondment comes to an end, there may be a short gap between your next placement which can be a valuable opportunity. During this time, you might:

  • Get involved in smaller projects
  • Mentor colleagues and share insights from your secondment
  • Reflect on what you’ve learned and prepare for your next move
  • Focus on training and professional development, such as pursuing charterships or other professional qualifications
  • Get involved in broader initiatives, such as Waterman Aspen in the Community, Social Value activities, fundraising for our charity of the year, or attending industry events.

Next steps and reflection

No matter which path comes next, the end of a secondment is the perfect moment to pause, reflect and plan. You’ll have a Personal Progression Plan with your Waterman Aspen manager, where your goals and career aspirations are recorded. Reviewing this can help guide your next steps and ensure your new secondment aligns with your personal and professional development. It’s also a chance to reflect on questions such as:

  • What new skills have I picked up?
  • How can I apply what I’ve learned in my next role?
  • What new skills would I like to develop in my next opportunity?

Taking time to reflect ensures that the momentum from your secondment continues to support your growth and sets you up for even more opportunities ahead.
