Proud to support Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeships

We’re pleased to celebrate the success of three Degree Apprentices in our South region. Rebecca Edwards, Aleks Sokov and Sam Turner are all in the first year of their Civil Engineering degree at University of Portsmouth, which is part of their apprenticeship sponsored by Waterman Aspen. This day-release course allows Rebecca, Aleks, and Sam to complete their degree while gaining valuable work experience at the same time.

Sam has 5 years of experience, primarily as a Bridge Inspector, and completed his Higher National Certificate (HNC) in 2024 to begin the degree course. He is supervising works for Bath & North East Somerset Council and using his training to operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) to inspect bridges on a tourist steam railway line. Sam commented “I am proud of achieving HNC and looking forward to challenge of gaining a Civil Engineering degree and IEng MICE”

Aleks and Rebecca recently joined Waterman Aspen straight from 6th form college. Their talent and enthusiasm for Civil Engineering was spotted through the programme of STEM design activities our South team have been running at the college over the past 2 years. They are currently both seconded to the Highway Design team of Portsmouth City Council. Rebecca said “I am grateful for the opportunity to achieve a qualification as well as work experience alongside the company’s support and amazing team. We are all excited to see what the future has in store!”

Aleks also noted “Waterman Aspen provides unmatched individual support for career development and obtaining professional qualifications. With our mentor’s support, we are on our way to obtaining Incorporated Engineer status with the ICE by the end of our five-year course.”

A huge thank you to all our colleagues who continue to mentor and support the Degree Apprentices, we’re grateful to you for giving your valuable time and sharing your expertise!

Waterman Aspen would also like to thank the team at Portsmouth City Council for engaging in this initiative to kick-start the careers of local students, support the city’s university, and create young designers to support infrastructure improvements within Portsmouth.
