The project team involved in the delivery of A46/A5360 Anstey Lane improvement in Leicester scooped two prizes at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards (EMMAs) 2021, winning the Medium Project Award and also being commended in the Team Achievement category.
The scheme involved increasing the capacity of the A5630 Anstey Lane between its junction with the A46 Leicester Western Bypass and Bennion Road in preparation for a 3,000 homes development in Ashton Green, which is at the northeast end of Bennion Road. It included dualling the 400m single-lane section of Anstey Lane, increasing the number of lanes on the two A46 interchange bridges, widening two A46 interchange slip roads, improving all adjacent pedestrian and cycle routes, and installing new traffic signals, streetlighting and drainage.
The project was managed by Waterman Aspen’s Teresa Hylton and used local suppliers within a 20-mile radius, helping to drive local skills employment. The works were delivered with an exemplary safety record, on-time and under budget, despite Covid-19 restrictions.
By using a hybrid power system in their project offices, the project reduced CO2 by 220 tonnes, added £2.2 million in social value terms, and engaged with 180 local students at STEM events.
Well done to all the key people involved from Galliford Try, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council, Waterman Aspen, Highways England and Midlands Highway Alliance Plus.
