We currently have an opportunity for a Principal Highways Engineer to join our expanding multidisciplinary team in Liverpool or Manchester.  Being employed by Waterman Aspen offers the opportunity to broaden your technical and professional expertise. Job Responsibilities:

  • Act as Project Manager or Highways Design Lead on projects.
  • Project planning, management, monitoring and control.
  • Lead and oversee feasibility, preliminary and detailed design of highways schemes, including the preparation of drawings and standard details corresponding to the numbered series in MCHW, and specification appendices and bills of quantities in accordance with MCHW.
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary designs, e.g. highways, drainage, road lighting, traffic signals, structures, landscape.
  • Prepare pre-tender construction cost estimates, technical notes and reports.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors and stakeholders, and chair project meetings.
  • Comply with CDM.

Essential Requirements:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an appropriate professional organisation, or demonstrable equivalent UK experience.
  • Competency in highways design in accordance with local authority and UK national standards, e.g. DMRB, MCHW, MfS, LTNs, Traffic Signs Manual.
  • Effective and appropriate communication and organisational skills.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills to develop other engineers and technicians.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to commute within the North West region if required.
  • The legal right to work in the UK.


  • Experience with NEC3/NEC4 contracts, e.g. preparation of works information / scope, project management and site supervision of construction works.
