We currently have an opportunity for a Senior/Principal Drainage Engineer to join our expanding multidisciplinary team. Job responsibilities:

  • To act as the Highway Authority’s ‘drainage technical expert’ and be the point of contact in relation to all drainage queries, correspondence and complaints, including issues raised by internal and external stakeholders and members of the public.
  • To provide scrutiny, feedback and technical input on Development Control applications received through the statutory planning process and internal Section 278 interfaces, to ensure external third-party proposals do not risk the highway drainage network and to maximise benefits of the proposals to the road network.
  • To liaise with and advise external stakeholders in the development and updating of statutory design guidance documentation, through the ongoing DMRB/MCHW review and update process in collaboration with National Highways.
  • To identify, establish and prioritise the Highway Authority’s annual and 5 year programme of drainage inspection, assessment, maintenance, upgrade, improvement schemes.
  • To review, manage and prioritise the Highway Authority’s drainage management programmes and initiatives.

Essential requirements:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with an appropriate professional organisation.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of DMRB and MCHW.
  • Effective and appropriate communication and organisational skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to commute up to 1.5 hrs (the role will be undertaken primarily on a ‘working from home’ basis during the ongoing pandemic but may require the post holder to work from the Highway Authority’s office when future restrictions allow).
  • The legal right to work in the UK.


  • Experience with NEC3/NEC4 contracts, e.g. preparation of works information / scope, project management and site supervision of construction works.
