As the first step of the wider UK Central project that links Solihull through to the new HS2 hub, the Solihull Gateway is a £2.3 million Highway improvements project in the Station Road and Poplar Road area of Solihull town centre.
Located in the centre of England, Solihull is at the heart of the national rail and motorway network on the southern edge of the West Midlands Conurbation, between Birmingham and Coventry. The aim of the project was simple: to make visiting Solihull town centre more accessible and convenient whilst improving the aesthetics of the area. The shared space principle has been adopted, taking advantage of a variety of stakeholders to influence the design.
The project falls under the banner of Centro’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) funding programme, where the additional funding aided in broadening the scope of the project to include improvements for public transport users and public realm improvements.
