He had previously worked for traditional Highways Design consultancies during his 17 year career, so secondment was something totally new to him.
Tom highlighted, “My main concern was what would happen when my first secondment ended and how does ‘downtime’ work. Once I received my 4 weeks’ notice period from my secondment employer, the regional management team were immediately on the case sending out my CV to clients and arranging interviews. They also put in regular calls in with myself to make sure I was happy and well informed, so any concerns I had soon disappeared.”
Tom’s secondment ended on the Friday and he started his new secondment on the following Wednesday. He hopes his experience will reassure others that secondment is exciting, varied and a great way to gain experience.
