The Engineer Exchange: National Careers Week 2024
6th March 2024
Tune into the latest episode of The Engineer Exchange for a National Careers Week special.
Tom Herbert is one of the newest members of staff in the Yorkshire & Humberside region, joining us in the middle of a full UK lockdown.
He had previously worked for traditional Highways Design consultancies during his 17 year career, so secondment was something totally new to him.
Tom highlighted, “My main concern was what would happen when my first secondment ended and how down time worked. Once I received my 4 weeks’ notice period from my secondment employer, the regional management team were immediately on the case sending out my CV to clients and arranging interviews. They also called me regularly to make sure I was happy and well informed, so any concerns I had soon disappeared.”
Tom’s secondment ended on the Friday and he started his new one the following Wednesday. He hopes his experience will reassure others that secondment is exciting, varied and a great way to gain experience.
