Sponsorship of Markham Vale Mining Memorial

Sponsorship of Markham Vale Mining Memorial

Walking Together is a mining memorial artwork by Stephen Broadbent to commemorate those who died in the 3 disasters at Markham Colliery (21st January 1937, 10th May 1938 and 30th July 1973). Each figure represents one of the miners who died. There will be a total of 106 figures on completion of the memorial.

As part of the latest works Waterman Aspen have sponsored the memorial figure of Bernard Gregory. Bernard was from Barlborough in Derbyshire and was 34 when he lost his life in the 1938 disaster.

At the unveiling event on 16th September Waterman Aspen managers Ben McGrath and Dan O’Neill met with Bernard’s relatives and chatted about the memorial and our shared mining heritage (both Ben and Dan had grandads who had been miners).

Bernard’s family have written to express their gratitude to Waterman Aspen for sponsoring the memorial figure of Bernard and we are certainly very happy to be involved with this project.
