water of leith flood prevention scheme
client - city of edinburgh council
-
The project was developed to protect properties along the Water of Leith and Murray Burn from flooding. The defences will be sufficient to protect against a peak river flow from a 1-in-200 year event (a factor for climate change has also been included).
-
The dams at Harlaw, Threipmuir and Harperrig reservoirs will be developed to create upstream retention ponds in the Pentland Hills.
-
Flood defences in the city will include new flood walls or embankments together with strengthened existing boundary walls in many areas between Lanark Road and Bonnington Mills.
-
Floodgates will be located at certain access points. Some footbridges will be raised and will include a lifting bridge at Bells Place.
-
Pumping stations will also be built at various locations to pump drainage into the river when water levels re high and a comprehensive programme of landscaping will carried out.
