triangleabout scheme
client - nottingham city council
-
As part of a wider project (Turning Point East) in Nottingham, the local highway network to the east of the city centre is being regenerated, involving re-design of junctions, upgrading existing traffic signals, installing high quality pavement finishes on footways and carriageways.
-
As part of the design, footways were being widened quite considerably in this area of works, which meant that the existing roundabout was too big and large vehicles (buses) wouldn’t be able to negotiate the turn with the large roundabout and the widened footway.
-
A design was agreed which meant demolishing the existing roundabout and putting one back with a 6m diameter with a further 3m wide over-run area for vehicles to straddle if they needed the extra width. This was encompassed within a granite kerb circle around the over-run area with a 25mm up-stand. Once construction started it became apparent that two manholes, which would fall within the over-run area, were going to cause them problems as they would need lowering by at least 500mm.
-
The idea of building a triangle within the circle of granite kerbs came about. The vehicle turning circles were checked on AutoTrack to make sure there was enough space to get vehicles round and align the triangleabout accordingly whilst making sure the manholes remained within the triangle.
