When did you join WA? September 2006.
For what reason did you join? In my previous role as Group Manager, I was responsible for the network management on Council roads within the Stewartry Area of Dumfries & Galloway Council and had just been offered early retirement. When I was approached by Waterman Aspen and offered a similar secondment position on the trunk road network within Scotland, I saw this as a very attractive opportunity and one where I could utilise my considerable network management expertise in a very positive way.
Current secondment: Since commencing employment with Waterman Aspen, I have been carrying out the role of Area Manager in trunk roads network management. My role as Area Manager is both challenging and interesting covering all aspects of Management and Maintenance of the Trunk Road Network within the North West Unit as well as giving me the opportunity to participate in other high profile projects and have made a significant contribution in the development and implementation of the Graduate Training Scheme. As Area Manager I am responsible for the management of the North West Contract in relation to the A83, A84, A85 and A828 trunk roads. In addition, I undertake corporate responsibilities managing and controlling the complex financial monitoring of the North West Unit as well as landscape and cycling issues for both the North West and North East Units.
Good bits: Working for Waterman Aspen has allowed me to utilise my professional skills for the benefit of the company. I am a Reviewer with the Institution of Civil Engineers, a role which I have undertaken for the past 16 years and I have been able to pass on my considerable knowledge in helping young graduates within Waterman Aspen work towards obtaining their professional qualifications. In support of my Reviewer responsibilities, I am also Supervising Civil Engineer within Waterman Aspen which is a mentoring role overseeing the continuing development of graduates.
Future plans: At my stage in my career, nothing too ambitious other than to continue to further enhance my professional role within Waterman Aspen. |

When did you join WA? March 2007
For what reason did you join? I previously worked for Worcestershire County Council as a Senior Project Engineer in the Accident Investigation Team. I gained a lot of knowledge and experience there and joining Waterman Aspen enabled me to further my experience.
Current secondment: My specialism is in Road Safety Auditing, where I currently undertake Road Safety Audits as an Audit Team Leader for three different clients. My primary placement is with a City Council where I am seconded as a Senior Engineer within their Traffic & Network Management Team and work as a full time Road Safety Auditor, in addition I also undertake regular Road Safety Audit work for Waterman Transport & Development and a consultants based in Warwick.
Since joining Waterman Aspen I have significantly increased my Road Safety Audit experience, and have undertaken audits across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, along with benefiting from auditing some substantial size schemes. This included the major £140M M1 Westlink improvement scheme in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the new Tesco main distribution centre for Scotland based in Livingston and the 65 acre re-development of the former Rolls Royce works in Filton to create a Prologis business park.
I was promoted to the role of Area Manager for the Southwest in 2008. I am enjoying the role and I'm looking forward to the challenge of developing and expanding the business into the Southwest area.
Good bits: I really enjoy the variety of work that results from working for three different clients, and the challenge of balancing the workloads of three clients and the pressures of being an Area Manager.
Future plans: I'm currently working towards achieving Engineering Council Registration as an Incorporated Engineer, along with joining the Society of Road Safety Auditors. I'm also determined to establish myself as a successful Area Manager. |

When did you join WA? July 08.
For what reason did you join? I joined WA to gain more experience. I was previously working for Warwickshire County Council in the traffic management section. I had previously completed a HNC in civil engineering and wanted to gain experience of engineering work. WA was able to offer a placement in either engineering or traffic management to develop my skills.
Current Secondment: I currently work in the scheme design department where there are currently 50 ongoing projects. One scheme that I am working on at the moment includes new bus shelters, a new pedestrian island and road improvements at the local Aldi supermarket. I am checking the designs to ensure they are accurate.
Good bits: I enjoy applying skills that I have learnt in my role. I am applying standards and always learning new practices and there is plenty of variety as I am looking at different schemes.
Future: I would like to gain more experience and see where it takes me. I am gaining engineering experience and increasing my knowledge on different types of work. |

When did you join WA? February 1998.
Why did you join? I joined the company because at the time it offered me the opportunity to gain experience in different fields of work and gain on the job experience whilst gaining qualifications (ONC & HNC in Civil Engineering) which were studied part-time. Aspen Associates paid for my training and helped me gain the relevant job experiences and qualifications that have stood me in good stead over the years.
Current Secondment: I am currently working as a Senior Technician at a County Council in the Safer Routes to School team. I mainly deal with implementing village speed limit review schemes, following the schemes from inception to completion which includes feasibility, interaction with local bodies, ie. councillors, parish councils etc, consultation, detailed design, implementation and TROs. Also working on minor works orders and Area Committee schemes.
Good bits: I worked for WA when it was Aspen Associates and have seen significant changes since the early days of my employment. The managers have remained approachable and issues are easily discussed with anyone within the company. It is good that you can move placements easily and quickly if required. During my years on Secondment with Waterman Aspen I have gained confidence to experience new things and meet new people, have made many good friends along the way and adapted into new roles with ease. Waterman also have regular social functions which help you get to know new people that have joined the company within the area and keeps everyone that little bit closer which makes it quite unique and suits me down to the ground.
Future plans: Currently working towards becoming an Incorporated Engineer through IHT (already a member - MIHT) which will help improve my professional qualifications. I'm very happy with the company and would like to progress within the company, with possible plans on being considered for a management position in the not too distant future. |
