Chris

Chris joined Waterman Aspen in February 1998 whilst studying to gain his HNC in Civil Engineering at Wolverhampton University. During his seven and a half years working for Waterman Aspen he has been seconded to many public and private sector clients including:

• Tamworth Borough Council – Traffic calming schemes, accident studies (6 months)
• Mason Richards Partnership – Infrastructure work (Wolverhampton and Birmingham offices – 18 months)
• Birmingham City Council – Safer Routes to Schools, traffic calming schemes, accident studies (10 months)
• Warwickshire County Council – Bus Showcase Schemes (2 years)
• Halcrow, Worcester – Safer Routes to Schools (2 years).

During these secondments he has gained a wide range of experience working on many diverse schemes and has been involved from inception to completion.

“I am happy with the way secondment works in terms of offering variety and getting experience in different aspects of my field of work. During my time with the company I have gained a broad range of experience with different clients. I know that working for Waterman

Aspen will never allow me to get stuck in a rut due to its relationship with a wide range of public and private sector clients.

The variety of work has helped me develop from a land surveyor & draughtsman to now being a Senior Technician with 6 years post HNC experience.

My Managers have a lot of confidence in my ability, and have learned to trust me over a period of time. With the experience I have gained over the years my managers want me to become part of a professional institution within the industry and continue gaining valuable experience through career progression.”

 Phil

Phil rejoined Waterman Aspen in May 2005 after a two year stint working for a small Consultant Engineering Firm where, although it offered a varied workload, the competitive package and excellent support tempted Phil to return to the secondment arm of the Waterman Group.

“The move has allowed me to build on confidence gained from my previous experience and I have been lucky that the placements Waterman Aspen has found for me have provided the challenge and opportunity I was looking for in a job. This relevant work experience coupled with the added security of working for a large organisation with the associated benefits has really validated my decision to rejoin the company”.

Over the past 18 months Phil has been seconded to the Highways Departments of both Lancashire County Council and Halton Borough Council. The opportunity provided by his current placement at Halton has allowed Phil to act as Assistant Engineer as opposed to his more traditional Technician role.

“My current placement has allowed me to take on more responsibility for the various schemes I am working on which is a great motivator. Although being seconded into an unknown environment can be a little daunting the support and guidance offered by the local Waterman Office always helps smooth the transition and the fact that the client needs the support from seconded staff means you’re guaranteed to be kept busy”.

For the future Phil looks forward to a long career with Waterman Aspen and plans to take advantage of the Group’s training support to further his professional development by working towards ICE Chartership.

Michael

I joined Waterman Aspen in May 2004, since this time I have worked at St Helens Council in the Traffic & UTC section. I am really enjoying my secondment at St Helens and feel as though I have developed my skills as a technician in a number of areas. Since joining Waterman I have gained confidence and experience that has enabled me to take on more responsibility which in turn has allowed me to have a greater involvement in a number of various and diverse schemes. Waterman Aspen has been very supportive in my studies and has provided the time and support necessary to complete them. The Waterman social events provide an excellent opportunity to get to know colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere to catch up, meet new people, and have a laugh.
