leighton linslade town council

award winning traffic calming measures

This Bedfordshire Highways scheme was introduced to remove the traffic signals and replace them with raised tables, zebra crossings and mini-roundabouts. This was following on from the publication of the Leighton Buzzard and Linslade Town ‘The Big Plan’, with the aim to improve the environment for vulnerable road users and to reduce congestion.

The scheme won the Highways Magazine Excellence Awards 2009 for the category of Traffic Flow Improvement Scheme of the Year.

Benefits of the Traffic Calming Measures are:
Traffic Flow Improvements -
Reduction in vehicle delays, queue   lengths & vehicle speeds by implementing mini roundabouts at junctions and by replacing signalised crossings with zebra crossings.
Accident Reduction
-
Reduction in accident numbers and severity by implementing a 20mph zone using raised tables and junctions to reduce the speed of the traffic.
Improved Pedestrian Facilities - Providing new zebra crossings and central island and reduced pedestrian delays by replacement of signal controlled crossings with zebra crossings.
Improved Cycling Facilities
- Improvement in the environment and safety for cyclists by implementing a 20mph zone. Raising driver awareness of the presence of cyclists.
