EEA junction lighting

client - birse rail/network rail

  • December 2008 saw the introduction of the WCML 'Very High Frequency' ('VHF') timetable by Virgin Trains and a significant television advertisement campaign by Network Rail proudly announcing the reduction in journey times and increase frequency of services form London to Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow.
  • As a consequence of the introduction of the VHF timetable there is no little or no practicable daylight maintenance access to allow inspection of points at key junctions along the WCML. Provision of lighting at these key junctions will enable patrolling and maintenance to be undertaken in the hours of darkness, avoiding disruptive and expensive daylight closures.
  • In February 2009 Birse Rail Consultancy were asked to undertake designs for two sites with the remit that the design should provide the most cost effective and energy efficient installation throughout the whole life cycle, adopting a minimum maintenance strategy.
  • To provide a more efficient whole life cost solution with reduced maintenance regimes it was considered to replace the Thorn Orus luminaire (which utilises 70W metal halide lamps) with emerging high power LED technology which uses less power and last significantly longer.  Waterman Aspen secondees worked closely with lighting manufacturer Urbis to produce a prototype light.
  • This prototype has been trialed and accepted for use by Network Rail and will go into mass production in the next few weeks.  This unit will save in the region of another £1-2million on the project installation costs and an estimated £0.8million over the design life of the lighting (20 years) on the reduced power consumption and maintenance requirements.
