groveway canal bridge strengthening

client - milton keynes council

  • The project involved the strengthening and structural refurbishment of two side-by-side structures carrying a dual carriageway across the Grand Union Canal in Milton Keynes.
  • The strengthening works included removal of the existing bridge parapets and the existing unsightly barrier that was protecting either side of the bridge. This was followed by partial demolition of the deck edges and re-construction of new reinforced concrete cantilevered footways with replacement parapets.
  • This work brought the structure up to full capacity to comply with national standards and extended its useful life.
  • In order to carry out these works the road was closed to all traffic and pedestrians in both directions for approximately 8 months with fully signed diversion routes.
  • The Canal was also closed for a limited period to enable the concrete repairs to the soffit to be completed. Utilities also had to be diverted to facilitate the strengthening work.
