the green building

client - taylor woodrow developments

Development comprising 32 self contained luxury apartments with a 120 place children’s daycare nursery and doctor’s surgery.

The environmental strategy was to create a low energy building through radical design reducing environmental impact and increasing occupant comfort within a commercially sustainable budget. Energy and conservation measures targeted:

  • Embodied energy used in construction
  • Active energy consumption by plant and equipment
  • Passive design involving the creation of a thermally efficient envelope

From a structural perspective, the adoption of a reinforced concrete frame minimised the embodied energy, exposed concrete surfaces absorbed and radiated heat through heating pipes contained within the floor screed.

Other energy conservation features include a central atrium to naturally ventilate the occupied spaces, wind turbine to generate power, roof mounted solar thermal collectors to generate domestic hot water.
