We have a Training Scheme that has been approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers, which means that we are able to offer formal Training Agreements to Graduate Engineers who want to go on and achieve Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status. If you have a MEng in Civil Engineering then we will be able to fast track you towards Chartered Engineer status and make sure that you are able to gain experience in a number of different areas in order to satisfy the ICE’s Core Objectives.
If you have a BEng, or another first degree in a non civil engineering subject, don’t worry – we will be able to design a programme of on the job training, called Further Learning, which will enable you to work towards membership of the ICE.
We currently have more than 30 graduates undergoing training. Read the staff profiles to find out what we have to offer:-
Tufail
Tufail joined Waterman Aspen in 2000 with a MEng from Loughborough University. He has always been interested in bridges and structural engineering, and has been seconded to Leicestershire County Council and Owen Williams Railways, with a short spell working for Waterman Burrow Crocker at our Lockington office. He is now back at Leicestershire and has designed and supervised the construction of two civic amenity sites in Loughborough and Coalville.
At his recent appraisal Tufail commented “I am very happy with the way that secondment works, in terms of offering a variety of training and a broad range of experience with different clients. I know that I will never get stuck in a rut!”
That variety of work has helped Tufail achieve the ICE’s Core Training Objectives.
“My line managers at Leicestershire have a lot of confidence in my ability, and they have learned to trust me over a period of time. They are happy to give me worthwhile and valuable experience that will help my training and they recognise that if I am happy and fully motivated they will get more out of me too. The design and site supervision of the two schemes will allow me to complete my Core Objectives and will give me a project for my Chartered Professional Review.”
With a wife and young family to support there is more pressure now to achieve Chartered status!
Robert
Robert joined Waterman Aspen in the September 2007 having just graduated that summer with a Beng(H) from Nottingham Trent University, along with an accompanying diploma of industrial studies gained from a 15 month work placement.
"I was initially looking for a job with a structural consultant and had received various offers when I came across Waterman Aspen or perhaps more accurately they came across me. When I learned of the nature of the secondments I came to realise that they had the potential to provide an opportunity to sample a range of disciplines from across the diverse spectrum that is the civil engineering industry. After a few years of ‘sampling’ I hope to be in a more informed position as to what area of engineering I want to specialise in. Although this ‘grand plan’ of mine may delay initial training in specialised fields of knowledge, I believe that experiencing a broad range of disciplines helps shapes oneself into a more ‘rounded’ engineer who can consider and solve problems from a more holistic approach. As so far as training goes I am due to attend a couple of all day training course in the next couple of weeks (Feb 08) covering Construction Contracts and H&S, both of which will help deepen my knowledge of the industry and provide very useful transferable skills.
With the potential for a variety of work offered by the secondments as well as the healthy remuneration package on offer, I did not find turning the other job offers down that I had received to be a difficult decision. I have been with Waterman Aspen for roughly six months in which time I have been on secondment with Cheshire County Council in their highways section working on major maintenance schemes and a traffic calming scheme.
Waterman Aspen organises a number of entertainment functions for its staff, thus far I have ‘experienced’ a night out at the greyhounds and night out at a comedy club. These events provide the opportunity to meet and/or catch-up with your fellow Waterman colleagues whilst being able to unwind and have a jolly good knees up."
Wairimu
"The ability to work for a variety of clients was one of the reasons why I joined Waterman Aspen. During my time at Waterman Aspen, I have had secondments with traditional civil engineering consultants as well as local authorities. This has given me an insight to the workings and mindset of the different organisations resulting from competing needs, limited finances and the need to make a profit. The variety of clients has also increased my appreciation of diversity.
Working at Waterman Aspen means being open, flexible and committed to getting things done. I know that my work reflects on the calibre of all employees at Waterman Aspen, yet I do not feel encumbered by this thought. Instead, I consider it is a sign of confidence in my abilities to satisfy the client and to grow my strengths. In particular, my secondments have been tailored to suit my training needs taking into account those areas I need to fulfill the requirements for chartership.
Of course it is not all about work…Waterman Aspen organise a number of get-togethers for staff members - time to let the hair down and have a few drinks. Seriously though, on these occasions I’m able to catch up with fellow colleagues and find out what’s going on in their lives. Yes, there is a monthly magazine but nothing beats having a chat with old friends and meeting new people.”
