If I accept the offer where will I be placed in my first secondment? |
An offer has been made because we feel your skills will be an asset to the company over a long period of time. We have a detailed knowledge of the market and the interest there will be in you. At the point the offer was made we may have an indication of the likely first place of secondment but we would not look to secure the first placement until we know you have accepted the offer and a start date has been agreed. Once that has happened we will keep you fully informed of progress towards arranging your first placement.
What kind of organisations am I likely to be seconded to? |
Our client base, comprising public and private sector organisations, is extensive. An indication can be found on the client base page.
How far will I be expected to travel to my secondment client? |
We aim to place all staff as close to home as possible, certainly within a car drive of one hour. If necessary we would expect our staff to be prepared to travel up to 1.5 hours each way per day but in essence we strive for this to be the exception rather than the rule. Assistance will be provided with commuting costs as set out in your offer.
Where will I park when I’m seconded and who pays? |
Many clients will be able to provide their own free parking but where this is not available Waterman Aspen will pay parking costs. Generally reasonably priced parking will be available within a short distance from the client’s office. In some instances we cover the cost of public transport commuting costs where this is a more comfortable option that car travel.
Changing clients sounds exciting but what about the stability of the market place, how does it all work? |
There will always be exceptions but generally a client will be looking for support for a minimum period of 3 months, say. It is not unusual for this to extend for a much longer period. The shortest secondment we have ever been requested was for two days – very rare! At the other extreme we have had secondments extend well beyond 10 years!
I’m thinking of accepting a salaried position. What happens if I am unplaced, either on commencement or between secondments? Do I still get paid? |
It is not unusual for there to be occasional periods of downtime. Yes, you will be continued to be paid throughout these periods as normal.
How many hours will I work and will overtime be paid? |
Our standard working week for employees is 40 hours. Where the client is happy for you to do in excess of this and it is rechargeable then overtime is payable at rates set out in your contract.
How can I progress my career within the company? |
As you become more experienced we will be able to offer placements with greater responsibility. It is not unusual for our staff to become key players within our clients’ offices and take on team leader roles, often supervising the client’s own staff. In addition, for those having an interest in business development, we can discuss opportunities to join our own managerial team.
Will I be able to maintain professional training if I am moving between clients? |
Yes, we have Supervising Engineers who will direct your professional development within Waterman Aspen. Clients will often agreed to be Delegated Engineers and help sign off reports too.
Will Waterman Aspen sponsor me on a course? |
Every application to be considered for course sponsorship will be considered on its merits. It needs to be relevant to your career development and strengthen your subject area knowledge and CV. We sponsor lots of employees on ONC, HNC and degree courses together with other individual training courses.
Can Waterman Aspen provide me with a training agreement? |
For our trainee civil engineers we offer a training scheme that is approved by the Institution of Civil Engineers for the three levels of Chartered membership (CEng), Incorporated membership (IEng) and Engineering Technician membership (EngTech). The scheme is structured such that diversity in experience can be achieved, the ultimate goal being success in acquiring professional qualifications that are amongst the best in the world.
Does the company offer a pension scheme? |
Yes, together with many other benefits as set out on the website.
What are my obligations with regard to the company car if I take that option? |
The company will cover the cost of routine servicing, wear and tear, road tax and insurance. You will just be required to keep it in good order and organise periodic servicing.
Can I use the company car for my own personal use? |
Yes, subject to the limitations of the insurance (rallying, etc excluded). Permission is required before the car can be taken outside of the UK. |
