Gurudas Biswas
“Gurudas Biswas is a Chartered Structural Engineer who joined Waterman Aspen in September 2004 after retiring from the Highways Agency. He had many years experience initially in the design and management of building and other industrial and commercial structures with private Consulting Engineers, Local Government and then Government organisations. Later on he served with the Highways Agency, where he was responsible for the management of technical approval of all forms of highway structures and also advising on all structural issues in connection with the design, assessment and construction of these structures.
“After retirement, I continued working in the Agency on a part-time contract basis through secondment from Waterman Aspen. I had inherent knowledge particularly of a few complex structures over a long period of time and my continued involvement has helped the Agency tremendously. With my extensive experience in structural works, I was able to fit into WA with a professional and personal commitment and it has been a pleasure working for them”.

I have worked for Waterman Aspen since October 2006, not long enough to make an informed judgement you may think, but after 24 weeks working for Waterman Aspen I can tell you that it is the best move I have ever made.
After working within 3 Local Authorities within my previous 14 years working life the past 24 weeks have been like a breath of fresh air, treated as a valued engineer rather than part of the office furniture.
In this time I have been based at Urban Vision, Salford for 8 weeks and for the past 16 weeks at Capita Symonds, Carlisle. This has given me the opportunity to use the skills I already had at the same time as broadening my knowledge and technical skills in a different environment.
The support received from all connected with Waterman Aspen has made a very big decision, a very good decision. Things happen when they need to happen; and more importantly in a timescale that they need to happen working for Waterman Aspen.
The flexible benefits that are part of the salary package are very attractive and there is no need to negotiate a year on year pay upgrade as the Managers ensure all staff receive a review every year unprompted.
All in all not a brave move, but a great move.

Who says working for Waterman Aspen means moving from client to client? I joined Aspen Associates in 1999 and have been with Conwy County Borough Council Bridges Section throughout that period. Of course if you want to move around then that’s OK and I have found that if you do have a problem with your secondment, the management will do their utmost to help.
Since being with Conwy Council I have gained a huge amount of experience in fields that I probably otherwise wouldn’t have. Conwy Bridges Section are part of the North Wales Trunk Road Agency and that link has provided me with lots of opportunities to get involved in interesting and varied projects. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for clients, and in particular local authorities, to recruit good quality staff. That means your client values your contribution to his organisation and if you demonstrate your abilities and strengths you can become a valued team member. WA also encourages you, through annual appraisals, to develop your career and if you want, achieve recognised professional qualifications.
Waterman Aspen offer a very attractive package; the company car is particularly beneficial. After years of running old cars all I have to worry about now is which colour to go for! I’m hoping I won’t need the BUPA care provided but at least it’s reassuring to know it’s there. The company also organises social events and we always have a good Christmas party, paid for by WA of course! The bonus scheme means that you can look forward to a little cash boost just before Christmas and you even get a bonus if you manage not to take any sick leave during the year!!
