dewar place transformer station

client - scottish power

  • The existing Dewar Place Transformer Station will be removed from the open air and a new state of the art transformer/reactor hall will be built.
  • The development includes a new 33kv switch room, a new 3000sqm transformer and reactor room and 2000sqm cooling building. A new tunnel and reception shaft will bring the 275kv lines into the site directly by the transformers from a similar shaft in Gardeners Crescent, the power having been reduced from 400k at Kaimes.
  • Problems within the compact site are numerous and include 2 x 275kv Gas compression electric lines and at least 8 33kv electric lines along with 11kv cables, control cables, fibre optic and telecoms lines. There are also 2 Network Rail tunnels, the remains of a gas/tar works dating back to the 1850’s, a live sewer and 11kv cables which supply the Edinburgh International Exhibition Centre.
  • Once the new three storey facility is complete the area above the facility and the area to the north where the existing transformers are will become available for further development.
