When did you join WA? 2000.
Why did you join? I had just returned from travelling and was also working in the North East. I knew one of the Waterman managers and he suggested that I apply for a job with WA in the North West as I was planning to move back there. I was then interviewed, offered a job and subsequently started working within 2 weeks.
Current Secondment: I currently work in the bridges section at a Borough Council. I spend a lot of my time working on the a large bridge painting job, writing specifications for contracts and contract management. The interesting aspects of my job are dealing with and solving problems on site.
Good bits: One of the best aspects of working at this Borough Council are the people in the office who I get on extremely well with and socialise with on a regular basis. I also enjoy the work involved with looking after the borough’s many bridges which require regular maintenance works. The bridge I work on is the biggest steel bridge in Europe which requires a great deal of maintenance and is quite exciting walking over the arch with no rail to hold onto! The good aspects of working for WA are the social evenings and the good communication lines throughout the company. WA is a proactive company and the flexible working provides a positive work environment.
Future plans:
I have aspirations to one day work abroad.

When did you join WA? 1998.
Why did you join?
I was working for a consulting engineers on Merseyside and saw an advert in NCE magazine for Aspen. I wanted a new challenge and a change and was impressed with the set up. I started work the next week and I was impressed with how quickly Aspen got things moving.
Current Secondment: I am currently working for a Borough Council in the bridges section. I work on general bridge maintenance, regular assessments and inspections for bridges. I prioritise any work packages that need to go out to contractors and indentify larger schemes and produce continuous documentation. Work goes out to tender and I supervise the tender process and also undertake onsite supervision and manage on sites. A recent interesting project that I have been working on is a bridge management system (database) which is digitalising the records and identifying the best value schemes to be carried out.
Good bits: The people at the council are good people to work with and there are regular social events within the office. The work is varied and there is always a range of tasks to be involved in. The positive aspects of working for WA are that the company look after you if you have any issues or problems. WA show interest in their employees, management are always available and the communication lines are effective. The social events are a good opportunity to meet other people within the company and also ensure we feel well supported.
Future plans:
I would possibly like to think about working towards my Chartership and also think about perhaps aiming to become an Area Manager. I would also like to work abroad one day.
