Where we work

Highways & Transportation

Highways & transportation engineers

Highways & Transportation is very much at the heart of our business. We live and breathe all things civil engineering, and even though we’ve been doing it for over three decades, it feels like we’re only just getting started.

We are proud to have been involved with every major civil engineering project in the UK since the Channel Tunnel. Our people have provided specialist expertise for the 2012 London Olympics, HS2 and even the visit of the Pope, leaving their mark on history.

If you have a skills gap, or simply need some specialist expertise without the commitment of employing staff, our fixed-term and flexible secondments will help complete your team.

Armed with decades of experience, our engineers have seen it all. Working alongside your staff, they become a key member of your team, carrying out everything from feasibility and design work, through to construction and delivery.

What can we do?

  • Highways
  • Traffic Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Bridge Maintenance
  • Drainage Design
  • Transport Planning
  • Project Management
  • Development Control
  • Site Supervision
  • CAD Technicians

Who do we work with?

A better question might be, “who don’t we work with?” Local authorities and public sector bodies form the bulk of our clients, but we provide support to a whole range of private sector consultants too.

Key contact

Danny Green is our highways and transportation Divisional Director. He’s been a highways engineer for more than 20 years and has been with Waterman Aspen for most of his career, so completely understands the key to a successful secondment project.

Project examples

Here’s a snapshot of just a few of the projects our people are involved in.

Major urban infrastructure improvements

Major urban infrastructure improvements

Working with Kirklees Council to provide highly-valued expertise within the highways team, managing a variety of town centre projects to improve the environment for pedestrians and increasing access to public transport.

Our secondment was for an initial three-month period and the relationship is still thriving some several years later, such is the impact of our work.

Technical supervision of major bridge construction projects

Technical supervision of major bridge construction projects

The Whitley South Scheme is a major construction project being run by Warwickshire County Council to create 3.7 million square feet of manufacturing and warehouse employment space.

Our colleagues on secondment are providing technical support to ensure a range of major structures (including bridges over the River Sowe and River Sherbourne) are constructed to the required quality and safety standards.

Accessibility improvements for innovative city centre projects

Accessibility improvements for innovative city centre projects

Working with Sunderland City Council, this project involved developing the area around the Sunderland Empire Theatre, the old police station and the new Sunderland Auditorium. The scheme included the closure and pedestrianisation of Garden Place in line with the construction and opening of the new auditorium, which had been built half a metre below the carriageway to improve accessibility inside the building.

Our engineer produced 3D designs, identified utility diversions, produced technical drawings and provided technical support throughout the construction process.

Traffic signs and road safety markings

Traffic signs and road safety markings

We have been working with Dumfries & Galloway Council on a brand new household waste recycling centre. On the site, there are electric vehicle charge points, cycle parking and bus stops being built to ensure the site is accessible to all, along with plans to add footpaths in the nearby forest for users who travel by foot. There is also a reuse centre that will be built onsite for people to donate their old furniture which can then be upcycled and resold.

Our secondee is providing expertise for the traffic signs and road marking on the site, ensuring they are correct and clear for pedestrians and road users.

What is it really like to work on secondment as a Site Supervisor?
